Hi,

I hope this is the right place for this. I am taking this class to finish up my college career here at OSU. I have only a few more classes to take to get my Liberal Studies degree. I live in Portland, and work downtown at a health club. I look forward to blogging with you all1

I'm not sure if this is the right place either, but here goes:

I'm Jessie, in Beaverton, OR. Finishing up my LS degree and then hoping to enter a MAT program. I currently work in a private school teaching Pre-K.
I really think that communication is extremely important in all aspects of human life, but I am really interested in understanding it better to help aid in my communication with the various relationships in my life; student-teacher, parent-teacher etc..

I was wanting to know where we access the 4 video clips... Also, do we need to watch all 3 hours of the ist week lectures?

Are there only 2 of us in this class?

Thanks

Jared

Hi,

I am also pursing a Lib Studies degree with an emphasis on Behavioral Science. I live just outside of Portland with my husband, two teenage daughters and two yellow labs. I love being able to finish my degree on-line and still be here with my kids. I am an "older" student and this is my first blogging experience. It's always nice to learn something new! I am very much the introvert, so studying communication should be a very interesting topic as well. Good luck to all.

Thanks to everyone for getting this blog conversation started. The video material is there for you to use; watch what is helpful. In the videos I present material, guide student activities, and provide a lot of examples (some too lengthy). I explain key ideas via lecture and PowerPoint slides.

The video clips are in the video class sessions (not separate).

When I last checked, there were 18 people signed up for this ecampus class.

Thank you for your introductions. I have been a teacher/professor for 35 years and have been at OSU since 1987. I developed the first version of the COMM 321 ecampus course in 1999. I redesigned the class in Winter 2008.

I hope this works. I've never blogged before. Hello, all. I'm a senior finishing my NR degree with the policy option. I live in sunny Eugene, Oregon. I've been meaning to take this class for a while, as competent communication is a nec-essary tool used to successfully navigate my way through this world.

Hi all,

I am a senior at OSU working towards a liberal studies degree. I currently work and live in Hong Kong, where I have resided for the last 7 years. Tackling communication (and language) problems has been central to my experience living overseas, so I am excited to learning more about this subject.

I finally got this figured out and although I posted an "intro" on blackboard i thought i would add one here as well.

I'm working on finishing up my undergrad and this is my first "Comm" course. I heard about this class from my sister who is an OSU grad (Communication) and she is a big fan of Professor Walker. I've been working in Vocational Counseling and I am a single Father. Being back at school is great and gives me an opportunity to converse with new people. I will be looking forward to blogging with you all,

Greetings,

My name is Dennis and I am checking in (late) from Milwaukie, OR. I am a late registrant to this class, so I'm a little late in getting this posted. I'm a Natural Resources student, taking this class to fill a requirement.

Good luck, all.

Dennis

Hello all from San Clemente, California. I am a senior at OSU finishing my Bachelor of Liberal Studies. I work as a field naturalist/science instructor with elementary school students and hope to get my teaching credential in the near future. I am also an artist (mosaics and jewelry). I look forward to reading the many interesting posts on this blog.

I really wish that this blog were set up to post with newer posts at the top cascading down to older posts at the bottom.
Just for ease of keeping up with all the posts.

Hola!!!!!

My name is Esmeralda and i am currently a senior at OSU. i am taking this class because it is a requirement for my college and also because i love to learn how to better interact with people. i currently have a job in sales which i love and this class helps me to do and be better in my career. I am excited to learn about the theories because it will help me understand the complex exchange of words that create language am meaning that thus creates communication. I'm also curious to know how theories explain ineffective communication and why is occurs.

Just generally, a comment: I've noticed in a lot of interviews with sports figures and on certain talk shows (I won't name names) that people rarely take the time to answer the question being asked. It's really interesting to watch, especially knowing more of the concepts behind the ins and outs of communication. When an interviewer asks a question, most often the answer is a pseudo-answer at best, and doesn't fully address what's ask. Anyone else notice that happening?

I just wanted to make a comment about using a blog instead of the discussion board in an on-line class. This is the first class that I have had that used a blog instead of a discussion board and for me it seems to be a more isolating form of communication. An on-line class has it's drawbacks by the fact that you never get to meet others in your class, but the discussion board usually makes up for that fact. A blog has a different feel for me. There does not seem to be much discussion back and forth between people. A blog seems to be more introspective, much like facebook or twitter, that is instead of creating a discussion it seems to promote personal thoughts only. I am an older student, so maybe this is the reason. Anyone else have that feeling? Is there a difference between and blog and a discussion board?

I have been noticing the intropersonal aspects of the blog as well Chris. With a discussion board, people are able to create new topics for discussion which allows for more complex and relevant areas of debate. This helps with the visibility of their ideas and allows them to expand further on the discussion as time goes on. With this blog we are bound to keep in the confines of the already established subject headers, which I've found to be discouraging at times.

Thanks for the response Will. I was concerned about posting my thoughts, but I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way. It just doesn't seem to flow back and forth very well. People tend to state ideas rather than participate in a discussion. As I have said, I am an older student and I just don't understand blogging. It seems to be more of a one way communicator.

I would have to agree with everyone here. One of the benefits of the discussion board feature in Blackboard is the ability to know which postings have been read and responded to already. With the blog, it is often intimidating and repetitive to scroll down through a long list of identical-looking postings. I have found the blogging to be more about advocating singular opinions with less back-and-forth, less focusing on a discussion. Just my two cents!

I totally agree with each of you that this blog is less than effective. The Discussion board is a better tool and forum for class purposes. This blog just seems to spin around very limited topics. And even introducing a new topic does not always start a new chain. Not that a new chain needs to be started, but it seems that this does not promote anyone to post significant blogs about the spectrum of information we learned in the class.

I completely agree with all your comments. I do not like that you have to go to a completely different website. The discussion board on BB is much more streamlined and easy to navigate. I have had other classes that have used blogspot and was not a fan. I just like the convenience of BB discussions.

ProfWalk said...

Last term most students preferred the blog to the BB discussion board. This term is different..."different strokes for different folks." As I have posted elsewhere, this course will use the BB discussion board in the future.
